We had another awesome day here at Groundwork Guatemala. Our day began really early as we left with the mission team at 7:00 AM to travel two plus hours to the village of Buena Vista.  Buena Vista is on the costal plain, approaching the Pacific Ocean.  The main “street” in the village is an old railroad bed minus the tracks. We saw trucks loaded with sugar cane on our way into the village.
The morning after our arrival was spent visiting Connie and Greg’s sponsored child, Jorge Ramon Hernandez (he is 10 Years old and he is in 5th grade) during his break from school and then he took us to visit his school.  The school is nothing like what we know.  It is just an open air cement block building with six rooms (open doorway) and a tin roof. They were modestly decorated and had desks for the children. Several of the boys were playing their football (soccer) during the break and Ramon joined them while we were there. We next  went to visit Ramon's home and to meet his family.  When we arrived we met his mother Marasol and baby sister Roserula. Within minutes the other children and Ramon arrived home from school, so we met his older sister, Carmen and younger sister Karen. We visited with them and got to know their family and Connie and Greg showed them pictures of their children and grandchildren.  Ramon's mother shared her favorite Bible verse, Jeremiah 33:3 and shared how that verse helps her. Several of us shared our bible verses and we got to hear Ramon read the verses in Spanish. He reads very well. Ramon's father, Jorge came home from his work while we were there so we got to meet the whole family.  The family was so appreciative of our visit and the help Groundwork Guatemala gives them and the sponsorship for Ramon.

Groundwork Guatemala visits this village once a week.  The adults had prayers and scripture lessons in the morning while we were at the home visit. After lunch we did our faith lesson on Jesus turning water into wine.  We did singing, puppet show, craft, and memory work.  Everything was centered around our theme. We had over 100 children participate. The home visit and the faith lesson experience will be a lifelong blessing to us.
The village has groves of rubber trees and we saw where they were harvesting the rubber sap from the tree by slicing grooves into the tree bark.  We saw mango trees, papaya trees, coconuts, poinsettia tree and pineapple plants.  One of the missionaries had one of the village boys climb the coconut tree and throw down coconuts.  Everyone sampled the juice and the fresh coconut.
We returned safely to Guatemala City around 4:30 P.M.
More to come tomorrow.

We had a great day yesterday.  We had a wonderful breakfast fixed by our hostess Ginny then we went to a Guatamala Church, Sendero de la Cruz. We know the last word is cross. It was a great experience to see how the Guatemalans worship.  They had about 30 minutes of just praising and singing before the church service.  The service was about two hours in length. We spent the afternoon preparing a craft that will be used next week and unpacking and storing all the supplies we brought.  We also rehearsed our faith lesson we will be teaching the children in the villages this week.  The temperature was in the low 80's.  We are a mile high here so it seems warmer.  Connie And Greg visited their Quincy friend and family for dinner. The rest of the team remained at the mission house.  Bedtime devotions were on Beautiful Feet, Romans 10:12-13.
Sunday, January 17, 2016 Today was a very relaxing day compared to yesterday. We woke up around 8:30 and got ready for church before breakfast at 9:00. After breakfast we finished getting ready and had a few minutes of downtime before we left for church at around 10:15. We got to church safe and sound thanks to our awesome driver Manuel. At church we got to sing some songs that we know, just not in our native language. The message was very good, coming from Nehemiah chapter 9:1-38. After church we visited with Carlos and his oldest daughter. Then when we got home we ate a delicious lunch of grilled cheese and organized all of the donations. Thank you SOO much to everyone who donated something to this trip, it will be used for great things! After organizing the donations the ladies spent some time getting crafts ready for the kids to do during their faith lessons later in the week. Then we had about 2 hours of downtime to nap and reorganize our bags. I spent some quality time with...

Tuesday

Today was a wonderful day. We woke up pretty early (I woke up around 6) and got ready for the day. At exactly 7am we had breakfast, holiday inn express Quincy style, minus the waffle maker, just the way we like it (if you know Kevin you get it). I had lots of coffee to wake me up. After breakfast and before devotions I got to visit with Sandra and Aracely. Sandra braided my hair, which is one of the best parts of coming down here (totally kidding), and then we went upstairs to "the upper room" for morning devotions, led by Aracely. She spoke about callings from God vs career choice. After devotions we went and put sun sauce and bug sauce on before choosing our van wisely (I got the van with the AC and got put next to quite a few Guatemalans, so I chose wisely). I'm not sure how many of you know this, but I am starting college this fall with the hopes of becoming an OB/GYN. Aracely is 7 months pregnant, and I was right between her and Sandra o...
