Hola!

We arrived in Guatemala City at about 1:00 AM. We had left church at 3:30 AM and drove to St. Louis in the church van.  Thanks to Aaron Clark for driving the team to the airport.  It made it much easier for unloading the bags that is for sure.  Thanks again to everyone that donated supplies.  We were able between the seven of us to get the donations to Groundwork Guatemala. Our first leg of the journey lead us flying into Atlanta, GA. There we had about a 2 and a half hour layover.  Our next leg was to Mexico City. We arrived there around 3:30 PM and then this is where our "fun" began. We were tied up in long lines for immigration for two hours and consequently missed our flight to Guatemala City. Once through immigration we then had to rebook new flights, get boarding passes and check our luggage again.  This all took an additional two hours.  We finally flew out of Mexico City somewhere around 10:00 PM and then did not arrive at Guatemala City until 12 MN.  I think all the team can say it was a very long day.  We were glad to see Kevin, Ginny and Manuel who were waiting for us at the airport. Customs in Guatemala City was very expedient compared to Mexico City. Once at the Mission house we were all eager to call it a night and head off to bed.  We will write about our Sunday later today or tomorrow.

Tuesday

Today was a wonderful day. We woke up pretty early (I woke up around 6) and got ready for the day. At exactly 7am we had breakfast, holiday inn express Quincy style, minus the waffle maker, just the way we like it (if you know Kevin you get it). I had lots of coffee to wake me up. After breakfast and before devotions I got to visit with Sandra and Aracely. Sandra braided my hair, which is one of the best parts of coming down here (totally kidding), and then we went upstairs to "the upper room" for morning devotions, led by Aracely. She spoke about callings from God vs career choice. After devotions we went and put sun sauce and bug sauce on before choosing our van wisely (I got the van with the AC and got put next to quite a few Guatemalans, so I chose wisely). I'm not sure how many of you know this, but I am starting college this fall with the hopes of becoming an OB/GYN. Aracely is 7 months pregnant, and I was right between her and Sandra o...
Sunday, January 17, 2016 Today was a very relaxing day compared to yesterday. We woke up around 8:30 and got ready for church before breakfast at 9:00. After breakfast we finished getting ready and had a few minutes of downtime before we left for church at around 10:15. We got to church safe and sound thanks to our awesome driver Manuel. At church we got to sing some songs that we know, just not in our native language. The message was very good, coming from Nehemiah chapter 9:1-38. After church we visited with Carlos and his oldest daughter. Then when we got home we ate a delicious lunch of grilled cheese and organized all of the donations. Thank you SOO much to everyone who donated something to this trip, it will be used for great things! After organizing the donations the ladies spent some time getting crafts ready for the kids to do during their faith lessons later in the week. Then we had about 2 hours of downtime to nap and reorganize our bags. I spent some quality time with...
Today has been an eye-opening experience for our team.  We began our day with devotions after breakfast.  Devotions were led by one of the Guatemalan missionaries, Carlos.  Carlos burst into a song of praise during his devotions and touched many of our hearts.  We then visited a ministry focused on "street boys", called Only a Child.  The boys live 24/7 in this ministry and work by crafting beautiful wooden boxes.  They attend alternative school on the weekends so they can receive an education.  Many of the these "boys" are in their 20s and are still working on their junior high education.  This ministry is started by a man who was a pastry chef in Boston, George Leger, but now he works full time with this ministry.  The boys have to follow strict rules in order to receive their lodging, food, and education.  The team was then introduced to the Guatemala City dump.  This is a very large dump where people scavenge for anything that t...
