Monday in Guatemala City

Our morning started with a delicious breakfast of pancakes and fresh fruit at 7:00.  We then had our morning devotions led by Julian, one of the Guatemalan missionaries, reflecting on Ps.119:7-20. He spoke of the need to search for God and to keep our eyes open to the needs of others.

We then proceeded to visit the ministry "Only a Child". This ministry was established by George Leger, who left his employment as a pastry chef in Boston upon being moved to minister to "street boys" in Guatemala City.  He felt he received a calling from God in 1994 to do this.  "Only a Child" provides shelter, a woodworking shop for employment and opportunities for education and advancement. For more information go to www.onlyachild.org.

Then our group went to the city cemetery which borders on the city dump, the "land fill" for Guatemala City.  Private and city trucks come there daily to dump their trash and other items which have been discarded. People come to the dump everyday to search for items with some value to either sell or use themselves. This is considered their work, but for us, it is difficult to see and understand.

After lunch with the Guatemalan missionaries, we divided into two groups to go on home visits.  Although living conditions are very primitive for the people here, they deal with some of the same issues as people in the United States such as: family relationships, health problems, hurt feelings, and lack of spiritual awareness.  We shared scripture and prayed for their specific needs at each home.
The hope is that some of these people will attend our faith lessons on Friday.

After dinner we practiced our faith lesson and songs for tomorrow and had a devotion about Jesus being the Light of the World.

We had a great day yesterday.  We had a wonderful breakfast fixed by our hostess Ginny then we went to a Guatamala Church, Sendero de la Cruz. We know the last word is cross. It was a great experience to see how the Guatemalans worship.  They had about 30 minutes of just praising and singing before the church service.  The service was about two hours in length. We spent the afternoon preparing a craft that will be used next week and unpacking and storing all the supplies we brought.  We also rehearsed our faith lesson we will be teaching the children in the villages this week.  The temperature was in the low 80's.  We are a mile high here so it seems warmer.  Connie And Greg visited their Quincy friend and family for dinner. The rest of the team remained at the mission house.  Bedtime devotions were on Beautiful Feet, Romans 10:12-13.
Sunday, January 17, 2016 Today was a very relaxing day compared to yesterday. We woke up around 8:30 and got ready for church before breakfast at 9:00. After breakfast we finished getting ready and had a few minutes of downtime before we left for church at around 10:15. We got to church safe and sound thanks to our awesome driver Manuel. At church we got to sing some songs that we know, just not in our native language. The message was very good, coming from Nehemiah chapter 9:1-38. After church we visited with Carlos and his oldest daughter. Then when we got home we ate a delicious lunch of grilled cheese and organized all of the donations. Thank you SOO much to everyone who donated something to this trip, it will be used for great things! After organizing the donations the ladies spent some time getting crafts ready for the kids to do during their faith lessons later in the week. Then we had about 2 hours of downtime to nap and reorganize our bags. I spent some quality time with...

Tuesday

Today was a wonderful day. We woke up pretty early (I woke up around 6) and got ready for the day. At exactly 7am we had breakfast, holiday inn express Quincy style, minus the waffle maker, just the way we like it (if you know Kevin you get it). I had lots of coffee to wake me up. After breakfast and before devotions I got to visit with Sandra and Aracely. Sandra braided my hair, which is one of the best parts of coming down here (totally kidding), and then we went upstairs to "the upper room" for morning devotions, led by Aracely. She spoke about callings from God vs career choice. After devotions we went and put sun sauce and bug sauce on before choosing our van wisely (I got the van with the AC and got put next to quite a few Guatemalans, so I chose wisely). I'm not sure how many of you know this, but I am starting college this fall with the hopes of becoming an OB/GYN. Aracely is 7 months pregnant, and I was right between her and Sandra o...
