After breakfast and morning devotions, our group traveled to Amatitlan which is approximately 75 minutes from Groundwork Guatemala's house in Guatemala City.  In the morning we split into two groups for home visits. One group went to the home of Dulce Marie, Pastor Steve's sponsor girl who is in fourth grade. The group was able to meet with her, her mother and two brothers.  They learned about Dulce Marie and her family and shared more about Pastor Steve's family.  The other group went to the home of the Keller's sponsor boy who is in second grade.  They met with his mother, grandmother and sister since he was with his class on a field trip.  Fortunately, he returned before our group left Amatitlan so the Kellers were able to meet Francisco.  At both homes our groups shared Bible passages and their meanings as well as praying for the families for health and other issues for which they requested prayers.  Both families seemed very appreciative for our visits.

In the afternoon we gathered at Gonzales Park in Amatitlan which is a concrete area covering approximately one eighth of a city block.  About two hundred children and teens were in attendance as well as approximately one hundred fifty adults.  At the same time as our group sang songs, told the Good Samaritan faith lesson and introduced and supervised the "helping hands" craft, Pastor Steve and Manuel, one of the Guatemalan missionaries, presented the same faith lesson to the adult group which was comprised predominately of females.  In addition and at the same time two of the Guatemalan missionaries presented the faith lesson to the teens.  Seeing all of this going on at the same time in such a small area with that many children and adults was an amazing sight.  It would not have been possible without the attentiveness of all the children and adults and their interest in God and the Bible.

As we  returned to Guatemala City in late afternoon and ate dinner, we reflected on another wonderful day of sharing God's love and seeing the excitement of the Guatemalan children and adults to hear more about Jesus. We also reflected on the Groundwork Guatemala ministry, Kevin and Ginny who started and operate the ministry, and on Ana, Carlos, Cesar, Julian, Manuel, Ody, Oscar and Sandra who are the Guatemalan missionaries.  All of them show their love each week to people who have very little in life but know the importance of knowing Jesus and learning more about Him.  They go to people in their homes, cities and villages and provide weekly faith lessons to people who need to know and want to know about Jesus.  Without this contact, most of the people would be lost.  God is truly working here through the Groundwork Guatemala ministry.  Our group thanks God for the opportunity and experience of spending these days assisting the ministry.

As usual the day ended with evening devotions and discussion of plans for tomorrow.

  2. Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. -Hebrews 13:20-21

Tuesday

Today was a wonderful day. We woke up pretty early (I woke up around 6) and got ready for the day. At exactly 7am we had breakfast, holiday inn express Quincy style, minus the waffle maker, just the way we like it (if you know Kevin you get it). I had lots of coffee to wake me up. After breakfast and before devotions I got to visit with Sandra and Aracely. Sandra braided my hair, which is one of the best parts of coming down here (totally kidding), and then we went upstairs to "the upper room" for morning devotions, led by Aracely. She spoke about callings from God vs career choice. After devotions we went and put sun sauce and bug sauce on before choosing our van wisely (I got the van with the AC and got put next to quite a few Guatemalans, so I chose wisely). I'm not sure how many of you know this, but I am starting college this fall with the hopes of becoming an OB/GYN. Aracely is 7 months pregnant, and I was right between her and Sandra o...
Sunday, January 17, 2016 Today was a very relaxing day compared to yesterday. We woke up around 8:30 and got ready for church before breakfast at 9:00. After breakfast we finished getting ready and had a few minutes of downtime before we left for church at around 10:15. We got to church safe and sound thanks to our awesome driver Manuel. At church we got to sing some songs that we know, just not in our native language. The message was very good, coming from Nehemiah chapter 9:1-38. After church we visited with Carlos and his oldest daughter. Then when we got home we ate a delicious lunch of grilled cheese and organized all of the donations. Thank you SOO much to everyone who donated something to this trip, it will be used for great things! After organizing the donations the ladies spent some time getting crafts ready for the kids to do during their faith lessons later in the week. Then we had about 2 hours of downtime to nap and reorganize our bags. I spent some quality time with...
Today has been an eye-opening experience for our team.  We began our day with devotions after breakfast.  Devotions were led by one of the Guatemalan missionaries, Carlos.  Carlos burst into a song of praise during his devotions and touched many of our hearts.  We then visited a ministry focused on "street boys", called Only a Child.  The boys live 24/7 in this ministry and work by crafting beautiful wooden boxes.  They attend alternative school on the weekends so they can receive an education.  Many of the these "boys" are in their 20s and are still working on their junior high education.  This ministry is started by a man who was a pastry chef in Boston, George Leger, but now he works full time with this ministry.  The boys have to follow strict rules in order to receive their lodging, food, and education.  The team was then introduced to the Guatemala City dump.  This is a very large dump where people scavenge for anything that t...
