Thursday

Today our crew once again headed in two different directions.  The guys once again made the long drive to Buena Vista.  But it is funny how they came to love the drive.  During that time they laughed, shared and even cried with each other and the Guatemalan missionaries.  It was truly blessed.  Today was a holiday in Guatemala "Dia de la Raza".  This meant that there were a few extra helpers on the jobsite with some men off of work.  They were much needed as the day was spent mixing by hand and spreading 150 bags of concrete that weighed 100 pounds each.  That is a lot of concrete!  But it was just enough to finish the job, complete with some crosses pressed into the corners and a little artwork by Andy.  The Guatemalans had a great sense of pride at how  much was accomplished in such a short time.  But even better than the structure itself was the influence Andy, Mick and Tom had on the Guatemalans.  They were able to see three men of faith, working together and sharing Jesús in actions that set a wonderful example of what it means to be a godly man.  And those three godly men have been changed forever, as each will be coming home with stories of God doing amazing work in their lives.

The rest of the crew, Lynda, Carie and Pastor Steve went to Gonzalez Park in Amatitlán, with the missionaries.  They were able to make one home visit to see little Kylie who was born just a week ago.  What a precios gift from God.  A big part of what Groundwork Guatemala does to help people is to sponsor children so they can attend school.  Today everyone got to spend some time with children that they sponsor, sharing stories, hugs and the blessings of God.  We were glad to be there to lend a hand to the missionaries who work so hard every week to share the love of God with so many.

Goodbyes can be so hard.  Tonight it was goodbye to the missionaries, all of whom made a great impression upon us and shared the Gospel just as much with us as they did with their people of Guatemala.  We shared some intial goodbyes with Kevin and Ginny.  We are so thankful that they provide us and hundreds of Americans every year the opportunity to experience this ministry and allow God to work in our hearts in amazing ways.  Tomorrow, it will be goodbye to Guatemala as we make the long journey home.  We look forward to reunions with our families and sharing the stories of God at work.  But we come back filled with joy at the things we shared together and most of all changed in ways we still do not quite understand.

Thanks for being a part of this journey with us by reading our blog, looking at our pictures on Facebook and most of all throught your prayers.

Dios le bendiga.

Today has been an eye-opening experience for our team.  We began our day with devotions after breakfast.  Devotions were led by one of the Guatemalan missionaries, Carlos.  Carlos burst into a song of praise during his devotions and touched many of our hearts.  We then visited a ministry focused on "street boys", called Only a Child.  The boys live 24/7 in this ministry and work by crafting beautiful wooden boxes.  They attend alternative school on the weekends so they can receive an education.  Many of the these "boys" are in their 20s and are still working on their junior high education.  This ministry is started by a man who was a pastry chef in Boston, George Leger, but now he works full time with this ministry.  The boys have to follow strict rules in order to receive their lodging, food, and education.  The team was then introduced to the Guatemala City dump.  This is a very large dump where people scavenge for anything that they can sell for money.   People f

Thursday

This morning many of us experienced our first earthquake. It was a rather large one, but was focused in other parts of Guatemala so we only felt a little shaking. After a grab and go breakfast of fruit and cereal, Carlos led devotion. He reminded everyone to acknowledge the presence of the Holy Spirit and moved us with his beautiful singing. We took about an hour's drive to Gonzalez Park in the vans. Sharon got to meet her sponsor child this morning, which she enjoyed very much. A group of us also went to visit Pastor Steve's sponsor child Dulce before lunch. Her mother recently had a baby which Pastor Steve and Ellie both held. Next we enjoyed our sandwiches and chikys before we made the short walk from Gonzalez Park to John the Baptist Park. Many children there were playing and reading the books we brought with us, so we got to spend time with them before we started our faith lessons. Hayden and Ellie both had fan clubs and it was quite funny to see the swarms of children sur
We arrived in Guatemala City at about 9:30 PM. We passed through immigration and customs with no hassel.  No line at this time of day.  Guatemala does not do Daylight Savings time so we are an hour behind Quincy. It was beautiful flying in over the city at night.  We saw fireworks from the air. I'm sure they were not there for our arrival. Our hosts Kevin and Ginny met us at the airport in a truck and a van. It was a short 15 minute trip to the mission house.  We got oriented to the house and sleeping quarters tonight. It has been a long day and everyone is tired but still excited to be here. We will attend church at a Guatemalan Church in the morning. Good night to all.
