After breakfast and morning devotions, our group traveled to Amatitlan which is approximately 75 minutes from Groundwork Guatemala's house in Guatemala City.  In the morning we split into two groups for home visits. One group went to the home of Dulce Marie, Pastor Steve's sponsor girl who is in fourth grade. The group was able to meet with her, her mother and two brothers.  They learned about Dulce Marie and her family and shared more about Pastor Steve's family.  The other group went to the home of the Keller's sponsor boy who is in second grade.  They met with his mother, grandmother and sister since he was with his class on a field trip.  Fortunately, he returned before our group left Amatitlan so the Kellers were able to meet Francisco.  At both homes our groups shared Bible passages and their meanings as well as praying for the families for health and other issues for which they requested prayers.  Both families seemed very appreciative for our visits.

In the afternoon we gathered at Gonzales Park in Amatitlan which is a concrete area covering approximately one eighth of a city block.  About two hundred children and teens were in attendance as well as approximately one hundred fifty adults.  At the same time as our group sang songs, told the Good Samaritan faith lesson and introduced and supervised the "helping hands" craft, Pastor Steve and Manuel, one of the Guatemalan missionaries, presented the same faith lesson to the adult group which was comprised predominately of females.  In addition and at the same time two of the Guatemalan missionaries presented the faith lesson to the teens.  Seeing all of this going on at the same time in such a small area with that many children and adults was an amazing sight.  It would not have been possible without the attentiveness of all the children and adults and their interest in God and the Bible.

As we  returned to Guatemala City in late afternoon and ate dinner, we reflected on another wonderful day of sharing God's love and seeing the excitement of the Guatemalan children and adults to hear more about Jesus. We also reflected on the Groundwork Guatemala ministry, Kevin and Ginny who started and operate the ministry, and on Ana, Carlos, Cesar, Julian, Manuel, Ody, Oscar and Sandra who are the Guatemalan missionaries.  All of them show their love each week to people who have very little in life but know the importance of knowing Jesus and learning more about Him.  They go to people in their homes, cities and villages and provide weekly faith lessons to people who need to know and want to know about Jesus.  Without this contact, most of the people would be lost.  God is truly working here through the Groundwork Guatemala ministry.  Our group thanks God for the opportunity and experience of spending these days assisting the ministry.

As usual the day ended with evening devotions and discussion of plans for tomorrow.

Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Today has been an eye-opening experience for our team.  We began our day with devotions after breakfast.  Devotions were led by one of the Guatemalan missionaries, Carlos.  Carlos burst into a song of praise during his devotions and touched many of our hearts.  We then visited a ministry focused on "street boys", called Only a Child.  The boys live 24/7 in this ministry and work by crafting beautiful wooden boxes.  They attend alternative school on the weekends so they can receive an education.  Many of the these "boys" are in their 20s and are still working on their junior high education.  This ministry is started by a man who was a pastry chef in Boston, George Leger, but now he works full time with this ministry.  The boys have to follow strict rules in order to receive their lodging, food, and education.  The team was then introduced to the Guatemala City dump.  This is a very large dump where people scavenge for anything that they can sell for money.   People f

Thursday

This morning many of us experienced our first earthquake. It was a rather large one, but was focused in other parts of Guatemala so we only felt a little shaking. After a grab and go breakfast of fruit and cereal, Carlos led devotion. He reminded everyone to acknowledge the presence of the Holy Spirit and moved us with his beautiful singing. We took about an hour's drive to Gonzalez Park in the vans. Sharon got to meet her sponsor child this morning, which she enjoyed very much. A group of us also went to visit Pastor Steve's sponsor child Dulce before lunch. Her mother recently had a baby which Pastor Steve and Ellie both held. Next we enjoyed our sandwiches and chikys before we made the short walk from Gonzalez Park to John the Baptist Park. Many children there were playing and reading the books we brought with us, so we got to spend time with them before we started our faith lessons. Hayden and Ellie both had fan clubs and it was quite funny to see the swarms of children sur
We arrived in Guatemala City at about 9:30 PM. We passed through immigration and customs with no hassel.  No line at this time of day.  Guatemala does not do Daylight Savings time so we are an hour behind Quincy. It was beautiful flying in over the city at night.  We saw fireworks from the air. I'm sure they were not there for our arrival. Our hosts Kevin and Ginny met us at the airport in a truck and a van. It was a short 15 minute trip to the mission house.  We got oriented to the house and sleeping quarters tonight. It has been a long day and everyone is tired but still excited to be here. We will attend church at a Guatemalan Church in the morning. Good night to all.
